Louisa May Alcott, (A. N. Barnard, Flora Fairfield) (1832 -1888) Second of four daughters, born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and raised in Boston and Concord, Massachusetts. Deeply influenced by her father's transcendentalist thoughts, experimental educational philosophies. Amos Bronson Alcott founded several schools, but all of them failed, forcing Abigail and her daughters to undertake the financial support of the family. Later, Alcott often remarked that her entire career was inspired by her desire to compensate for her family's early discomfort. Alcott taught school, took in sewing, and worked briefly as a domestic servant. At age sixteen she began writing, convinced that she could earn enough money to overcome the family's poverty. In 1851, her first poem was published in Peterson's Magazine under her pseudonym Flora Fairfield. The turning point of her career was Little Women. An autobiographical account of 19th century family life. From 1875 onward, her health deteriorated. Louisa May Alcott never married. She died on March 6, 1888.

Kingsley Amis

Mulk Raj Anand (1905-) Indian novelist. Born in a family of coppersmith in Peshawar. He was educated at the universities of Lahore, London and Cambridge. He became politically active in India's struggle for independenceand. Lived in England for many years, finally settling in a village in Western India after the war. Mulk Raj is known for his realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the poor in India.

R.M. Ballantyne, Robert Michael - (Comus) (1825-1894). Born in Edinburgh. Scottish writer for boys. Son of Alexander Thomson Ballantyne a newspaper editor and nephew of the Ballantyne brothers. Between the ages of 16 and 22 he worked in Canada at the Hudson Bay Company, trading with local Indians. 1847 return to Scotland. Working as a clerk at the North British Railway Company in Edinburgh for two years, and then for the paper-makers Alexander Cowan and Company. From 1849 to 1855 junior partner of Thomas Constable & Company, printing house. Hudson's Bay, or, The Life in the Wilds of North America, appeared in 1848. In 1866 he married Jane Dickson Grant. R.M.Ballantyne wrote over 80 books. He remained in Edinburgh until 1875, then lived in France, England and Italy. Ballantyne died in Rome, Italy, on February 8, 1894.

Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900). Born in Longworth, Berkshire, England, where his father John Blackmore was Curate-in-charge of the parish. After his birth, his mother died of typhus, his father moved back to his native West Country and Richard was taken in charge by his aunt. In 1831 John Blackmore married again and Richard went to live with his father and stepmother in Devon. School in Tiverton and scholarship Oxford. After Oxford he entered the law. Bar in 1852. 1853 he married, and in 1854 published anonymously two volumes of poetry. 1857 his uncle died leaving his nephew a sum of money which enabled him to realise a long-held ambition - that of possessing a house in the country. Gomer House 1860. Blackmore died at Teddington, on January 20, 1900 after a long and painful illness. Links to more information

Borrow, George (1803-1881). Born at East Dereham, Norfolk, son of a recruiting officer. Education in Edinburgh. Philologist, traveller and writer. In his late 30s he married and settled down in a house on Willow Lane in Norwich. He then started writing. He later moved to Oulton Broad where he died in July 26, 1881.
